I lived in Chicago for a long time. I travel the country. It is rare to find (outside of Chicago) a true Chicago style hot dog. Sure, there are plenty of hot dogs that call themselves Chicago style, but to find the real deal is unusual.
In Santa Rosa, CA Suzette and Jeff Tyler supervised by their small daughter have deviated from their “traditional careers” in order to open an authentic hot dog cart. And yes, they serve an authentic Chicago style hot dog. it all starts with a Vienna Brand (some prefer David Berg, but Vienna is official) all beef hot dog served on a steamed poppy seed bun with tomatoes, yellow mustard, tomatoes, peppers, onions, celery salt, a pickle spear and of course the neon green relish. At first bite you’ll think you are back in Chicago.
For those who harbor some sort of resentment against Chicago there are a variety of other hot dogs including the Mexi-Cali Dog (mayo, bacon, jalepenos, onions and tomatoes), the Buffalo Dog (buffalo sauce, blue cheese and celery salt), the Underdog (piled high with chili, mustard onions and cheese) and of course the Village Dog, simple, a Vienna dog with mustard and onions.
Jeff and Suzette’s friendly service (always with a smile) will make you appreciate the Chicago experience without having to make the drive 2,147 miles eastbound.
